The international group exhibition titled Landing invites people to take a contemplative step towards the many forms and meanings of landing through the specific world of the works on display - paintings, drawings, and sculptures.
The term itself, although based on germanic roots, meaning ground, soil, when understood as a verb, inevitably presumes not just the co-existence of another dimension different in essence, whether this would be a body of water or air, but also the intersection of these. When understood as a noun, we think of a level area at the top of a flight of stairs, a place to rest and catch our breath on our way, before transcending from one level to another.
Either way, the term encapsulates a condensed encounter of two states that are, although opposing, also enabling each other: being in motion and becoming stationary or vice-versa. One might argue that arrival can be experienced only if a journey has taken place, landing can only take place if there is a shift in the nature of planes carrying us, rejoice of being welcomed can be lived only if setting foot in another, foreign dimension, the sensation of being home can be felt only if coming in contact with something remote.
Landing could happen into an inspirational creative or empathic, contemplative, receptive state; into a different cultural dimension; into a reflective life situation; arrival to fulfilment, a destination, a milestone, or a junction in the journey. But landing can also be an arrival in a foreign exhibition space, in a shared interpretive framework, encouraging creators and viewers to rethink and question our own place and role in the world. Are we on the journey or have we just landed somewhere?
