Katerina Belkina puts the style of the Neo-Renaissance at the center of current questions

The ZEITGALLERY presents the first solo exhibition by Katerina Belkina in Dresden. Belkina grew up in an artistic household. From 1989 she studied at the art school and the Petrov Vodkin Art Academy in Samara. Major successes in the recent past included first place at the International Lucas Cranach Prize in 2015 for her work “The Sinner” and the “Hasselblad Masters 2016” in the “Art” category. This shows that Belkina successfully moves between fine art and photography.

With the series “Revival” now shown, Katerina Belkina reinterprets the historical formal language of the Neo-Renaissance and formulates contemporary questions in the context of art and psychology. In recent years it has been primarily staged self-portraits that have dominated her work. Belkina poses as a pregnant woman in her award-winning work “The Sinner”. In the background you can see Christ and the adulteress after Lucas Cranach the Younger. Belkina imitates the adulteress' clothing and takes her place, sitting in front of her. In this way she separates the woman from the crowd and places her at the center of the picture. In the series “Empty Spaces,” however, Belkina processes our divided relationship to the urban environment with a dystopian yet hopeful vision.
